Vintage Hamilton Military Hack Watch FAPD 5101 Type 1 Picture and Description:
For sale is a rare US military watch only made for one year in September 1970. It has the same parkerised case finish and dial layout as the more common other Vietnam era watches such as the Benrus DTU-2A/P and GG-W-113. However, the FAPD has a much larger case as shown by the comparison picture with a Benrus DTU-2A/P (Benrus is not included in this sale), it measures approximately 36.5mm across excluding the winding crown, 46.7mm lug to lug and lug size is 17mm. The case is unpolished and the fixed bars intact. The original black dial is in very good condition, as can be seen on the pictures, and luminous markers are largely intact. The hands are original to the watch, also in good condition but the luminous material is a recent application to match the dial. The screw in case back has the military issue markings:- WATCH, WRIST: NAVIGATION FAPD 5101 FED STOCK NO. 66454206363 MFG PART NO. 39985 CONT.NO. DAAA25-70-CO563 DATE SEP.1970 TYPE I US Inside case cack is signed HAMILTON WATCH CO. SWISS and s/n 1 686 373. It has an antimagnetic shield cover under the case back and the correct movement signed HAMILTON, 17J, calibre 684, which was derived from ETA 2391 with a fine micro regulating screw. Calibre 684 was specially customised for this watch and not used in any other Hamilton civilian or military watches. The hacking mechanism is still present and works. The movement has been cleaned, currently running strong and keeping time. The watch come with a hard to find 17mm olive green military surplus nylon strap from the same era as the watch and fits the 17mm lugs perfectly. FAPD Type 1 is in fact similar in case size to the more common British issued Hamilton 6B or GS marked watches. However, the difference is, apart from the case finish, the 6B and GS used both hacking and non-hacking calibre 75 and S75S movements.
